What is Myofascial Release?

John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release® (MFR) is a safe and effective treatment that focuses on the connective tissue, known as fascia. To fully understand MFR, we must first understand the importance of fascia.

Fascia is a continuous layer of connective tissue that covers every part of our body from head to toe. Including every muscle fiber, bone, blood vessel, lymphatic vessel, and organ. Connecting everything together like a giant spider web. Fascia helps shape our muscles, supports our skeleton, and gives our body its form. When healthy, fascia remains relaxed and moves easily without restriction. However, if you experience injury, trauma, inflammation, or infection, fascia can tighten and lose its pliability. This can create tension, pain, or limit your range of motion.

Myofascial Release helps to open fascial restrictions through gentle, sustained pressure on the body. Each hold typically lasts about 3-5 minutes or until the tissue softens, allowing it to return to a more flexible, functional state. This can improve movement and reduce pain. No lotions or oils are used throughout the treatment, allowing the therapist to better assess and treat the fascia.
